This watercolor painting is inspired by a petroglyph site of Wisconsin. There are many thunderbird images at this site. Here I chose to combine the actual imagery found at the site with several other symbols common to this area: turkey tracks and vulva forms. The rocks represent the Earth, the Birds represent sky spirits. It is from the juncture of mundane and sacred that life springs. This painting is included in “Hidden Thunder, Rock Art of the Midwest,” published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press.
